ATLANTA (ABC7) -- A man who died in a bedbug-infested cell in a Georgia jail's psychiatric wing "died due to severe neglect," according to an independent autopsy released Monday by lawyers for his family.
Lashawn Thompson, 35, died in September, 3 months after he was booked into the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. Public outrage over his death spread last month after a lawyer for his family, Michael Harper, released photos of Thompson's face & body covered in insects.
The independent autopsy report lists the cause of death as "Complications due to Severe Neglect," with "Untreated Decompensated Schizophrenia" identified as a contributing cause.
A combination of dehydration, rapid weight loss & malnutrition, complicated by untreated decompensated schizophrenia led to a fatal cardiac arrythmia, the report says. Because he did not receive necessary medical care or adequate food, water & shelter, his manner of death is homicide.
An earlier report from the Fulton County medical examiner's office found no obvious signs of trauma on Thompson's body but noted a "severe bed bug infestation." It lists his cause of death as "undetermined."
The new autopsy "confirms that this is one of the most deplorable in-custody deaths in the history of America," said prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family.
Thompson had lost 32 pounds, or about 18% of his body weight, during his 3 months at the Fulton County Jail & showed evidence of dehydration, the report says. In addition to an "innumerable number of insects" all over his body, his hands, feet, fingernails & toenails were filthy, it says.
Medical records from the jail indicate that Thompson received his last dose of the medications he'd been prescribed for his mental health issues 32 days before his death.
The independent autopsy was paid for by the Autopsy Initiative of the Know Your Rights Camp, an initiative started by former NFL star & activist Colin Kaepernick.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining 2 other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws & policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color & LGBTQ+ individuals.”
The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization & Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, in issuing travel advisories for the Sunshine State.
The warning approved Saturday by the NAACP’s board of directors tells tourists that, before traveling to Florida, they should understand the state of Florida “devalues & marginalizes the contributions of & the challenges faced by African Americans & other communities of color.”
Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists & tourism is one of its biggest industries. More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels. Tourism supports 1.6 million full-time & part-time jobs & visitors spent $98.8 billion in Florida in 2019, the last year figures are available.
Several of Florida’s Democratic mayors were quick to say Sunday that their cities welcomed diversity & inclusion.
The NAACP’s decision comes after the DeSantis’ administration in January rejected the College Board’s Advanced Placement African American Studies course. DeSantis & Republican lawmakers also have pressed forward with measures that ban state colleges from having programs on diversity, equity & inclusion, as well as critical race theory, & also passed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations & analysis in schools & businesses.

A native of Chicago, IL, Mike Lawry Baby is known for bringing his real life experiences into his music. From his high end metaphors, to his creative song topics, his music as well as his brand “Obey Your Dreams” is an inspiration to all, both young and old.
“Sometimes it Snows in April” is more than just a hip-hop mixtape title; it’s a powerful metaphor for the unpredictable nature of life. Just like April is known for its sunny weather, we often expect our lives to be smooth sailing, filled with sunshine and warmth. But sometimes, just like that unexpected snowstorm, tragedy can strike when we least expect it. It can disrupt our plans, our emotions, and our entire outlook on life…just like the inconvenience of snow in April.
But even in the midst of the storm, we can find moments of beauty and resilience. We can learn to adapt, to find warmth in unexpected places, and to appreciate the sunshine when it returns. "Sometimes it snows in April" reminds us to cherish the good times, but also to prepare ourselves for the unexpected and to find the strength to weather any storm that comes our way.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican woman who strangled a man to death while defending herself when he attacked & raped her in 2021 was sentenced to more than 6 years in prison.
The ruling against Roxana Ruiz spurred anger from experts & feminist groups who said it speaks to the depth of gender-based violence & Mexico’s poor record of bringing perpetrators of sexual violence to justice.
While the Mexico State court found Monday that Ruiz had been raped, it said the 23-year-old was guilty of homicide with “excessive use of legitimate defense,” adding that hitting the man in the head would have been enough to defend herself. Ruiz was also ordered to pay more than $16,000 in reparations to the family of the man who raped her.
In May 2021, Ruiz was working selling french fries in Nezahualcoyotl, one of the 11 municipalities in the Mexico State with an ongoing gender alert for femicides & another one for forced disappearances of women.
While having a beer with a friend, Ruiz, a Indigenous Mixteca woman & a single mother from the state of Oaxaca, met a man she had seen around the neighborhood. After hanging out, he offered to walk her home & later asked to stay the night because it was late & he was far from home.
Ruiz agreed to let him sleep on a mattress on the floor. But while she slept he climbed onto her bed, hit her, tore off her clothes & raped her, according to Ruiz’s legal defense. Ruiz fought back, hitting him in the nose.
He threatened to kill her & in the struggle that followed, Ruiz grabbed a T-shirt & used it to strangle her attacker.
In a panic, Ruiz put the man’s body in a bag & dragged it out to the street where passing police arrested her.
