BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge rapper Lil' Boosie appeared in court Monday morning for his initial hearing related to a first-degree murder indictment.

Lil' Boosie, whose real name is Torrence Hatch, stood before Judge Mike Erwin to plead not guilty to the murder. The hearing only lasted about two minutes.

"He's not guilty," said Defense Attorney Marcus Allen. "I think he's absolutely not guilty. I think he meant what he said. He's absolutely not guilty. We're just going to prepare for his defense and get ready to address the charges."

"I'd rather wait for the evidence to speak as to what happened," said District Attorney Hillar Moore. "He's got several different cases, so it depends on which one you're talking about. He also has the introduction of the drugs into the prison and obviously, he's presumed innocent at this point."

Allen also serves as a city prosecutor in Lafayette. He said he plans to meet with other attorneys to assist in Hatch's representation and address the charges once the defense gets the evidence.

"We have no idea what the evidence is at this point. There is a lot of rumors and innuendo going on, so we'll get the evidence and go from there," Allen explained.

The 27-year-old pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and drug charges as well. His girlfriend and two others also pleaded not guilty related to drug charges. Hatch was indicted on June 17 in connection with the shooting death of Terry Boyd.

Security was extremely high at the district courthouse for the arraignment hearings. Moore said this is a "regular case," but admitted it has a received high-profile attention. He also stated his confidence in getting a conviction against the entertainer.

"He's been indicted by the grand jury. We believe the evidence was there to support that indictment. This is one that we're going to try. I'm confident that we're going to win, otherwise, we wouldn't say it," he added.
