As most of you know by now Ronda Rousey suffered a brutal KO loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 last November.
Laila Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali, retired from boxing with an undefeated record of 24-0. She is an expert when it comes to the sweet science.
She recently discussed the Holm vs. Rousey fight and Holly's boxing background with former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen.
"I'm familiar with [Holm] from boxing. She was a champion in boxing. She hadn't loss many fights. I don't know what her exact record was. She wasn't undefeated, but she went undefeated for a long time," Ali said. "She's a champion. I can tell ... I can look in her eyes and see that she's strong mentally, physically and she's probably her toughest competition. I'm not surpised that she's gone undefeated in mixed martial arts."
Ali believes that Rousey bought into all of the hype surrounding her and that was part of her downfall.
“People hype fighters up, but at the end of the day, what did Ronda Rousey have? 12 fights, something like that,” Ali added. “And they’re calling her the best fighter ever, and I see that she truly believes that about herself.
“You’re only as good as the opposition you face. There were some girls out there I never had the opportunity to face. But I saw Ronda Rousey kind of act like she really does believe that she’s the best female fighter in the world. I was thinking, wow, she hasn’t even faced some of the other girls that are considered to be the best.”
A rematch between Holm and Ronda is in the works. In Ali's opinion fans should expect the same result as their first fight.
“I personally do not think that she’ll beat Holly Holm [in a rematch],” she said. “I think that if she fought her again, then the same thing and worse will happen. Holly Holm was just getting warmed up. You know what I’m saying? She was just getting warmed up. She had nerves, too. This was her big moment.”
Ali had a lot more to say. To hear more listen to the full interview up top.
