BEND, Ore. (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a white man on charges, including murder, in the shooting death of a Black man outside a nightclub in Bend, a district attorney said.
Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said during a news conference Thursday evening that Ian Cranston was indicted on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in the death of Barry Washington Jr. earlier this month.
Cranston has since been arrested and held in Deschutes County Jail on a no-bail warrant, Hummel said. It wasn’t immediately known if Cranston has an attorney to speak on his behalf.
An investigation into whether the shooting was motivated in part by race remains active, he said.
“It is believed that the initial interaction between Barry and Mr. Cranston began when Barry complimented Mr. Cranston’s girlfriend,” Hummel said.
Police were called to downtown Bend on Sept. 19 at 12:11 a.m. and found Washington, a resident of Bend, on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital and later died of his injury, police said.
Hummel said before the shooting, Washington was out with friends inside The Capitol, a downtown bar, and had approached the woman and complimented her. According to Hummel, the woman said she was flattered, but in a relationship. That was the extent of the interaction.
Hummel said outside later there was some pushing and some punches thrown, but that things had calmed down before Washington was shot.
