JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WAPT) —Hundreds of protesters gathered in Moss Point, Mississippi, on Saturday, demanding answers and accountability in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, as investigators continue to search for clarity.

"Transparency is important. Since we started this, that is all we asked for, and it's just a lot of things with this case that's going on that's not clear," said Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, during an interview with CNN on Saturday morning, hours before the protest.

Those who gathered in Moss Point said they want answers they believe they are not getting regarding Wells' death.

Wonsley said she has questions about her son's disappearance and death. The 18-year-old athlete was last seen during a Fourth of July boating trip to Mississippi's Horn Island. His body was found in the water the following day, but investigators have not yet determined how he died.

Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play. They are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results while continuing to interview everyone who was with Wells that day.

"Nolan was my best friend. That's what I keep hearing, you know, Nolan was my best friend, but the way Nolan was, he would have made sure, right, and with any of his friends across the board, whether you're black, white, pink, purple. Nolan would have made sure, hey man, let's go," said Wonsley.

"If you come with me, you're going to leave with me because if anything happens to you and I was the one that brought you there, then I would be the one to have to answer to your parents. So I'm not gonna leave anyone's child anywhere if I took them somewhere," said Elmore Wonsley, Nolan's father.

Wells' parents have hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump to help review the case and ensure their questions and concerns are heard as they continue searching for answers.

"Consider the fact that all three of the other boys made it home safely, but Nolan did not make it home safely, and they had his cell phone," Crump said.

The voices of protesters on Saturday evening were impossible to ignore as supporters filled the streets of Moss Point, promising to demand answers until they learn how Wells never made it home.
