Video After The Jump
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - There are new developments in the case of a University of Maryland student whose beating by a group of Prince George's County officers was caught on camera. Now, the FBI (web) has joined the investigation to determine whether there was a violation of federal civil rights laws. And, we're hearing from the family of the battered student.
You saw the video first on ABC 7 News of University of Maryland student Jack McKenna being beaten unconscious by police after a college basketball victory.
On Tuesday, Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto Hylton said he was disappointed and outraged by what he saw.
"We're not going to tolerate any inappropriate behavior by our employees," Hylton said.
As a result, one officer has been suspended and Chief Hylton says two others could be subject to similar punishment.
But James McKenna, the student's grandfather, told us, "They should go to jail. And my opinion, it was assault with intent to murder or assault with intent to maim, both of which are felonies in the state of Maryland."
The images of what happened on March 3 are now circulating on University of Maryland's campus, just as prospective students are making their final college decisions. For some, the violence caught on tape could be a determining factor.
"If police officers are acting that way then I think it is a big deal. I would actually have to think twice about coming here," said Emma Baker, high school junior.
Chief Hylton said Tuesday at his press conference that there is a sense of urgency about this investigation. They're currently in talks with various sources to identify the other officers involved
