Donald Sterling's interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, which aired Monday, April 12, was supposed to help rehabilitate his public image after audiotapes of him espousing racist views leaked in April. Instead, Sterling may have dug himself an even deeper hole as he attacked Magic Johnson.
Sterling did apologize for hurting people with his disparaging remarks about African Americans. The problem is he doesn't seem to to have a filter that prevents him from spewing hateful rhetoric. If he has a public relations team, they should be fired. If there was a chance that he would somehow manage to hold onto ownership of the L.A. Clippers after being banned from the league by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, he probably sabotaged himself during this interview.
On Magic Johnson:
He acts so holy. He made love to every girl in every city in America, and he had AIDS. When he had those AIDS. I went to my synagogue and I prayed for him. I hoped he lived and could be well. I didn't criticize him ... I could have. Is he an example for children? Because he has money he's able to treat himself. Big Magic Johnson ... what has he done? He's got AIDS. Did he help anybody in South L.A.? What kind of guy goes to every city and has sex with every girl? The he catches HIV. Is that someone we wanna respect and tell our kids about? I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. What does he do for the black people? He doesn't do anything.
Sterling accused Johnson of leaking a private conversation between them. He said Johnson contacted him after the V. Stiviano fiasco and said he would help him, but never did. He now suspects the former NBA player of using the situation to "lull" him to sleep while he plotted to buy the Clippers.
For the record, Johnson does not have AIDS. He is HIV positive.
