Former Buffalo Bills quarterback and NFL Hall of Fame player, Jim Kelly, has announced he is battling oral cancer for the third time.
The 58-year old released a statement on Thursday, March 1, through his publicist saying he is "shocked and deeply saddened" by the news.
"As our family has faced many trials and triumphs throughout the years, you have blessed us with your prayers. We are asking for those prayers once again," Kelly said. "With all of you by my side, we will fight and win this battle together. Staying 'Kelly Tough' and trusting God will carry us through this difficult time."
Kelly was first diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2013, which led to him having surgery to remove a portion of his upper jaw.
In 2014, follow up tests showed the cancer in his sinus. He underwent successful radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Kelly had been cancer free since then.
"The cancer is back. We are shocked, heartbroken, sad, angry, confused, and just darnn tired," Kelly's wife, Jill said. "Yet, despite how we feel, we KNOW that God is a promise maker and keeper. The more life and heartbreak I experience, the more I realize that this is not the end of the story. Life is temporary. And short. But eternity...is FOREVER."
