The Aurora police department says it’s “ashamed” of photos showing three officers mocking the death of Elijah McClain. Two officers in the photos were fired, the third resigned and a fourth officer was fired after responding “haha” to the pictures in a group text.
Jaron Jones, in the center of the photos, resigned before he was fired. His record will show that he was going to be terminated and he will not be allowed to be a police officer anywhere in the state of Colorado. He was pictured with Erica Marrero and Kyle Dittrich.
According to APD's internal review, Dittrich shared the photos via text message to two officers. One officer received them and had no response. The other, Jason Rosenblatt responded with "HaHa."
Rosenblatt was also fired Friday. He was involved in the initial encounter with Elijah McClain in August.
"He’s being fired for his lack and utter inability to do the right thing here," Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said. "To say 'ha ha' when he was engaged in the incident with Elijah McClain is absolutely unacceptable.”
The interim chief says the photos were taken on October 20, 2019 at the site of a memorial for McClain. The 23-year-old was stopped by officers while walking home from a convenience store months before. He was not armed and did not stop when officers told him to. The officers used a chokehold on him and paramedics injected him with a sedative. McClain died several days after the encounter.
