WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Fox and Dominion Voting Systems reached a settlement Tuesday in the voting machine company’s defamation lawsuit, averting a trial in a case that exposed how the top-rated network chased viewers by promoting lies about the 2020 presidential election.
An attorney for Dominion said the settlement was for $787.5 million.
“The truth matters. Lies have consequences,” said Dominion lawyer Justin Nelson in a news conference outside the courthouse after the announcement.
Dominion had asked for $1.6 billion in arguing that Fox had damaged its reputation by helping peddle phony conspiracy theories about its equipment switching votes from former President Donald Trump to Democrat Joe Biden. Fox said the amount greatly overstated the value of the Colorado-based company.

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A Martin County sheriff's deputy is accused of stealing baby clothes and groceries in Port St. Lucie.
The sheriff's office said Port St. Lucie police arrested Nelson Garcia on multiple petit theft charges.
Investigators said he stole items from a Walmart store on 4 separate occasions, beginning on March 1.
Garcia would walk up to the self-checkout area with a cart full of items & grab 2 a time, scan the first & pretend to scan the second.
Police said he paid $114.97 for $278.72 worth of merchandise on that trip.
Garcia made a second trip to that same Walmart on March 15 where investigators say he paid $97.91 for grocery items & walked out with $128.17 worth of merchandise that he didn't pay for.
He made another shoplifting run on March 25. Police said he paid for $85.60 worth of merchandise & failed to pay for another $71 worth of items.
On April. 1, Garcia paid $35.72 for groceries & walked out with $76.76 worth of un-scanned merchandise.
When investigators confronted Garcia with video of the transactions, the deputy said, "yea, that's me and if I didn't pay, I can go back and pay Walmart back but really for eggs that cost two bucks?" According to the arrest report, Nelson told investigators, "I wouldn't do that. Do you know what I do?" while pointing at his patrol car several times.
The sheriff's office says Garcia is on unpaid administrative leaving pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. He'll face an internal investigation by the sheriff's office as well.
Garcia has been with the sheriff's office for about 3 years. He's being held at the St. Lucie County Jail.

New Delhi (CBS News) — An Indian couple has allegedly died by suicide by using a guillotine-like mechanism to decapitate themselves in a sacrificial ritual, police said Sunday.
Hemubhai Makwana, 38, & his wife Hansaben, 35, both died by decapitation after using a homemade bladed mechanism in a hut on their farm in the western state of Gujarat.
"The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope," Indrajeetsinh Jadeja, a police sub-inspectorsaid. "As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads, which rolled into the fire."
Fire is considered sacred in Hinduism and it plays a significant role in several worship rituals. The couple apparently designed the device used in their beheading in such a way that their heads would roll into the fire altar, completing their sacrificial ritual.
Police, who said they had found a suicide note addressed to family members, have launched an investigation. The couple is survived by two children & their parents.
Family members reportedly told police that the pair had offered prayers in the hut every day for the last year.
Ritual human sacrifices are not unknown in India, where official data show there were more than 100 reported cases between 2014 and 2021. But almost all known cases of human sacrifice involve people killing others to please gods, rather than themselves.

[CNN Breaking News] - The man who shot and wounded 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, a Black teen, after the teen went to the wrong home to pick up his siblings will face two felony charges, Clay County attorney Zachary Thompson announced early Monday evening.
The man will face charges of assault in the first degree & armed criminal action.
Police learned the teenager’s parents had asked him to pick up his siblings at an address on 115th Terrace, but he accidentally went to a home on 115th Street, where he was shot in the head & chest.
After spending 3 nights in the hospital, Ralph is recovering at home, being cared for by his mother who is a nurse.
“It is inescapable not to observe the racial dynamics here,” said family attorney Ben Crump. “If the roles were reversed,” he continued, “how much outraged would there be in America?”
At a weekend rally, community & family members marched to & demonstrated in front of the man’s house, calling for charges to be filed. Protesters marched as they chanted, “justice for Ralph” & “Black lives matter,” & carried signs reading, “Ringing a doorbell is not a crime” & “The shooter should do the time.”

WELLSTON, Okla. (KFOR) – Former Wellston High School substitute teacher Emma Delaney Hancock was arrested Thursday, months after her alleged relationship with a 15-year-old student.
An affidavit released Wednesday shows the communication between Hancock & the student started in October 2022. It shows an assignment led Hancock to receive the students phone number.
“It started evolving into a more personal type of text message and they became sexual in nature,” said interim Public Information Officer for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations Gerald Davidson.
The 2 began exchanging nude photos & videos a few weeks later.
The boy also told investigators he had met Hancock privately inside the school several times to ‘make out’.
KFOR headed to Wellston for answers after finding out that Hancock’s father was Wellston Mayor Paul Whitnah & her husband was Wellston Police Chief Alfred Hancock.
Neither were available for comment.

LUBBOCK, Texas (EverythingLubbock) — Larry Pearson, 36, was sentenced by a Lubbock jury on Wednesday to 70 years in prison after he was found guilty on 2 counts of harassment of a public servant for spitting at Lubbock Police officers.
“You’re not going to get 70 years for something like this when you’ve never been in trouble before,” Prosecutor Jessica Gorman said.
Gorman said that Pearson was arrested in May of 2022 for domestic violence after a victim flagged down an officer in the 200 block of Zenith Avenue.
The victim told police that Pearson hit her several times & that he had a gun. Gorman said that firearm turned out to be an airsoft gun. A police report at the time stated the victim had “multiple visible injuries” on her face. Gorman said after Pearson was taken into custody, he was upset the victim was not arrested instead.
Gorman said Pearson started kicking at the doors in the officer’s vehicle. When the officers opened the door to tell him to stop, Gorman said he spit at both officers. Gorman said Pearson kept spitting after he arrived at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
During closing arguments of the sentencing phase of Pearson’s trial, Gorman asked the jury to consider a number that would “send a message” to Pearson & society. Gorman that Pearson had prior convictions of aggravated robbery & continuous family violence. Due to those convictions, the minimum sentence Pearson could have received would’ve been 25 years.

The argument between Cash App founder Bob Lee & the man accused of stabbing him to death allegedly centered around the suspect's sister.
Prosecutors say Lee & Tech start-up owner Nima Momeni had a spat before the stabbing & a witness says it was about whether Momeni's sister, Khazar, was doing drugs or anything inappropriate.
Prosecutors say the witness claims Lee tried to talk Momeni down & reassure him. Apparently, he failed in that effort ... because Momeni later drove Lee somewhere secluded & allegedly stabbed him 3 times -- once directly in the heart -- with a kitchen knife.
The docs say Khazar even texted Lee after the argument, making sure he was ok -- writing "Nima came wayyyyyy down hard on you."
She added, "Thank you for being such a classy man handling it with class Love you Selfish pricks."
Momeni was arrested Thursday for the murder of Lee & it turns out Momeni has a history of arrests -- including a DUI in 2004 & illegal possession of a switchblade in 2011.
Cops said Thursday they searched Khazar's upscale apartment as part of their investigation -- which was just down the street from the hotel where Lee was staying.
