One retired employee & 3 current members of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were found dead by suicide within a 48-hour period starting Monday.
The first death was reported at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday in Valencia, according to a statement from the department. Just over 2 hours later, a little after 12:50 p.m., detectives were called to a second death in Lancaster. At 5:40 p.m., they were again called, this time to a home in Stevenson Ranch.
At around 7;30 a.m. Tuesday morning, homicide detectives were sent to a hospital in Pomona, where a current employee was declared dead.
"Out of respect for their grieving families we will not be disclosing the names of the employees at this time," a statement said. "Homicide detectives and the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner will continue to investigate each incident independently."
Details surrounding the deaths remain unclear. Investigators have not noted if they believe the incidents to be connected.
Sheriff Robert Luna issued a statement on the deaths, which read:
"Our LASD family has experienced a significant amount of loss & tragedies this year. We are stunned to learn of these deaths & it has sent shockwaves of emotions throughout the department as we try & cope with the loss of not just 1, but 4 beloved active & retired members of our department family."
The boyfriend of former NFL great Earl Thomas‘ ex-wife was arrested for stealing his identity in an alleged $1.9 million scam.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old New Orleans man Kevin J. Thompson, who is in a relationship with Thomas’ ex-wife, Nina Thomas, in June.
Thompson is accused of cashing Thomas’ NFL checks, stealing from his bank account & transferring car ownership for several vehicles.
He's charged with identity theft, forgery, money laundering, credit card fraud, computer fraud & bank fraud.
Thomas was a 7-time Pro Bowler, 3-time All-Pro & 1-time Super Bowl champion as a member of the Seahawks’ legendary “Legion of Boom” secondary.
His NFL career spanned from 2010-19.
Thompson allegedly used a forged driver’s license that had his own photo & Thomas’ information to make a bogus bank account & transfer auto titles, including 1 for a Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV, which he drove to the bank on the day he was arrested.
He is accused of transferring the titles to “several” vehicles & then selling them.
It is unclear how he got “physical possession” of the autos.
Thomas’ credit union in Texas detected suspicious activity at Jefferson Financial in June, notifying authorities that it was not Thomas who opened an account with the New Orleans bank.
Thompson was arrested a second time when he attempted to retrieve the Rolls-Royce on June 16 in a different vehicle that had been reported stolen.

Late on Friday evening, Smiths Station Mayor F.L. "Bubba" Copeland tragically took his own life, following a slow police pursuit. Law enforcement officials had been dispatched for a welfare check on Copeland when they spotted him driving. Upon attempting to pull him over, Copeland stopped the vehicle, exited & fatally shot himself.
Sheriff Jay Jones emphasized that there were no outstanding warrants or justifiable reasons to stop the mayor's vehicle, apart from the welfare check. The 63-year-old mayor, who also served as a pastor, leaves behind his wife & 3 children.
In the days leading up to his untimely death, Copeland faced public scrutiny after news articles circulated, exposing his online presence as a transgender woman on social media. On his 62nd birthday, a report by 1819 News revealed explicit content & photos of Copeland under the username "Brittini Blaire Summerlin." Screenshots from his now-deleted Instagram & Reddit accounts were provided as evidence.
He had been quoted as saying: "What I do in private life has nothing to do with what I do in my holy life.
"Does this have any effect on me being mayor, that I sometimes put on a dress or sometimes put on makeup? Does that have anything to do whatsoever with me being mayor or being a pastor?"
Although Copeland referred to this online alter ego as a "hobby" that he kept within the confines of his home, the controversy surrounding his outing persists. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.

The suspected gunman in the shooting death of a father & stepson in a Brooklyn apartment building died after he was shot by cops attempting to take him into custody.
Officers were trying to arrest Jason Pass, 47, the suspect in Sunday's double murder, when he was shot by police after they alleged he had a knife in his hand.
Early Wednesday, police pulled over a car Pass was driving. He got out of the vehicle with a knife & began to run away. After a pursuit & a confrontation with Pass, police said he charged at officers with the knife & that is when they opened fire.
Pass was shot 3 times in the chest & 1 time in his right leg. Pass was still alive after the shooting & was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where he later died.
Chell said officers tried to negotiate with Pass before he was shot.
The shooting by police came after officers were called to a building on Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush just before 11 p.m. Sunday following an argument. Surveillance video showed Pass confronting upstairs neighbors in a dispute over noise.
Detectives said 47-year-old Bladimy Muthurin, his wife & his 27-year-old stepson came out into the hallway, and moments after Pass knocked on their door, Muthurin confronted him with scissors. Pass responded by pulling out a gun & shot & killed the father & stepson.
A witness said Muthurin was initially still alive, but Pass came back & shot him again. Both victims were found in a fourth-floor hallway with gunshot wounds to the head & body.
